Sydney Hero Ahmed Al Ahmed Faces Arm Amputation After Tackling Shooter
Ahmed al Ahmed, a 44-year-old bystander, is receiving international recognition for his heroic actions in disarming a shooter at Bondi Beach, Sydney, on October 1, 2023. Despite suffering severe injuries from the incident, he asserts that he has no regrets and would take the same action again.
According to his migration lawyer, Sam Issa, who visited al Ahmed at St George Hospital in Kogarah, the injuries he sustained are critical. “He’s not well at all. He’s riddled with bullets,” Issa stated, revealing that al Ahmed is enduring significant pain after undergoing his first surgery. The lawyer expressed concerns that al Ahmed may lose his left arm due to the extent of his injuries, which include approximately five bullet wounds in that arm and one bullet lodged in his shoulder blade.
A Community’s Gratitude
Al Ahmed, who became an Australian citizen in 2022, expressed a deep sense of indebtedness to the community that welcomed him. “He feels grateful for being in Australia, for being granted citizenship,” Issa explained. “He’s a humble man, not seeking coverage; he acted as he felt compelled to do.” Following his courageous act, support for him has surged globally.
A GoFundMe campaign initiated by CarHub Australia has raised over $1.7 million from more than 29,000 donors, including notable contributions from US billionaire Bill Ackman and Australian musician Kid Laroi. Comedian Amy Schumer also donated and shared a photo of New South Wales Premier Chris Minns visiting al Ahmed in the hospital.
Al Ahmed’s parents, Fateh and Malaka, reported that he is maintaining a positive outlook despite his injuries. They stated, “He is in good spirits,” a testament to his resilience in the face of adversity.
International Recognition
The bravery displayed by al Ahmed has garnered praise from various corners of the globe, including comments from US President Donald Trump. He remarked, “In Australia, there’s been a very, very brave person who went and attacked frontally one of the shooters… He saved a lot of lives.” Trump expressed his admiration for al Ahmed, highlighting the significant impact of his actions.
Having immigrated to Australia from Syria in 2006, al Ahmed is a tobacco shop owner and a father to two young daughters, aged five and six. His selfless act has transformed him into a symbol of courage and resilience, inspiring many in Australia and beyond.
As Ahmed continues his recovery, the global outpouring of support serves as a reminder of the strength of community and the profound impact one individual’s actions can have in times of crisis.
