A suicide bombing during a wedding celebration in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan, resulted in at least five fatalities and ten injuries on the evening of January 23, 2024. The attack took place at the residence of a local peace committee leader, Noor Alam Mehsud, in the Dera Ismail Khan district, as guests were enjoying the festivities.

District Police Officer Sajjad Ahmed Sahibzada confirmed that the explosion occurred near Qureshi morr while attendees were dancing. The force of the blast caused the roof of the venue to collapse, complicating rescue efforts for those trapped beneath the debris. In response, an emergency was declared at the District Headquarter Hospital.

According to Bilal Ahmed Faizi, spokesperson for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Rescue 1122, emergency responders quickly deployed seven ambulances, a fire vehicle, and a disaster response unit to the scene. The ongoing rescue operation aimed to assist those injured and recover the deceased.

Among the deceased was Waheedullah Mehsud, also known as Jigri Mehsud, the leader of the peace committee. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi condemned the attack, calling for a thorough investigation and promising that those responsible would face justice.

The region has seen a troubling pattern of violence targeting peace committee members. Earlier in January, armed assailants killed four individuals associated with a peace committee in Bannu district. In November 2023, a similar attack claimed seven lives at a peace committee office in the same area.

Local authorities have cordoned off the site to facilitate the investigation. The violence highlights ongoing security challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where peace committees have been established to combat militant activities.

As the community mourns the loss of life, the need for enhanced security measures and support for peace initiatives remains critical in addressing the threats faced by those working towards stability in the region.
