Senator Mark Kelly Faces Retirement Rank and Salary Reduction
Arizona Senator Mark Kelly is set to face a reduction in his retirement rank and salary due to comments made in a recent video. In the video, which featured several lawmakers, Kelly advised military personnel that they “can and must refuse illegal orders.” This statement has drawn significant criticism, prompting Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to initiate a censure against him.
Hegseth announced on November 6, 2023, that he has directed Secretary of the Navy John Phelan to evaluate Kelly’s military retirement status, with a recommendation to be submitted within 45 days. He stated, “Six weeks ago, Senator Mark Kelly — and five other members of Congress — released a reckless and seditious video that was clearly intended to undermine good order and military discipline.”
The Secretary emphasized that as a retired Navy captain still receiving a military pension, Kelly remains accountable to military justice. Hegseth further asserted that the Department of War and the American public expect appropriate measures to be taken in response to Kelly’s remarks.
In his defense, Kelly responded through a post on X, highlighting his extensive military service. “Over twenty-five years in the U.S. Navy, thirty-nine combat missions, and four missions to space, I risked my life for this country and to defend our Constitution,” he noted. He expressed surprise at the backlash from high-ranking officials, stating, “I never expected that the President of the United States and the Secretary of Defense would attack me for doing exactly that.”
Kelly underscored his dedication to his country, detailing the sacrifices made during his military career. He mentioned, “My rank and retirement are things that I earned through my service and sacrifice for this country. I got shot at. I missed holidays and birthdays.” He also referenced his personal life, including leading a space shuttle mission while his wife, Gabby Giffords, was recovering from a gunshot wound.
This controversy arises amid broader discussions within the military regarding the legality of orders and the responsibilities of service members. In a video released in November 2023, Kelly and five other congressional Democrats urged active-duty military personnel to disobey unlawful orders from superiors.
In terms of financial standing, Kelly’s net worth is estimated to be around $20 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. He has two sons who work in law enforcement and two daughters from a previous marriage.
The unfolding situation raises important questions about the accountability of elected officials and their responsibilities towards military personnel. As the Department of War assesses Kelly’s retirement status, the implications for his political career and public perception remain to be seen.
