Second Hindu Man Lynched in Bangladesh Within a Week
A violent incident in Bangladesh has resulted in the death of Amrit Mandal, marking the second lynching of a Hindu man in the country within a week. On the night of December 20, 2023, Mandal, 29, was brutally attacked by a mob in the Old Market area of Hosaindanga, located in Pangsha Upazila of Rajbari district. He succumbed to his injuries shortly after the assault, which occurred around 23:00 local time.
According to police officials, Mandal was identified in their records as a local group leader, known as part of a group referred to as “Samrat Bahini”. The incident escalated from allegations that Mandal was involved in extortion activities. Witnesses report that he had recently attempted to collect money from a local resident, Shahidul Islam, which triggered the mob violence.
The attack unfolded when Mandal and his associates visited Islam’s home to demand payment. Upon raising an alarm, local residents converged on the scene, leading to a violent confrontation. While Mandal’s associates managed to escape, one, identified as Mohammad Selim, was apprehended by the police, who also recovered two firearms from him. Debrata Sarkar, the Assistant Superintendent of Police for the Pangsha Circle, confirmed that despite immediate medical attention at Pangsha Upazila Health Complex, Mandal was declared dead by 02:00 on December 21.
Background of Violence
This incident is part of a troubling pattern of mob violence in Bangladesh, particularly targeting the Hindu community. Just days earlier, on December 18, another Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, was lynched and set ablaze in Mymensingh over allegations of blasphemy. The 25-year-old garment factory worker was brutally attacked by an angry mob after accusations of disrespecting religious sentiments spread rapidly among his coworkers and the local community. Eyewitnesses reported that after severely beating Das, the mob hung his body from a tree before setting it on fire, an act that drew widespread condemnation and protests, particularly in India.
The recent spate of violence has intensified scrutiny on the safety of minority groups in Bangladesh, leading to calls for stronger protective measures from both local and international human rights organizations.
Ongoing Investigations
In the wake of Mandal’s death, police have initiated an investigation to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the attack and to identify all individuals involved. Local authorities are under pressure to address the rising concerns over mob justice and the associated dangers that minority communities face.
Both incidents highlight a significant issue in Bangladesh regarding the treatment of religious minorities, with many calling for urgent reforms and more robust law enforcement to prevent such acts of violence in the future. As the investigations proceed, the community and observers alike await answers and accountability in light of these tragic events.
