Punjab Government Enhances Canal Irrigation in Sangrur District
In a significant move to boost agricultural productivity, the Punjab government has commenced new canal irrigation projects in the Sangrur district. On Thursday, Punjab’s Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema inaugurated the canal lining work at Dharmgarh Village, which will bring over 400 acres of farmland under irrigation. The project, estimated to cost Rs 1.61 crore, aims to ensure a consistent water supply for agricultural fields in the region.
During his address to the gathering, Cheema highlighted the benefits of the Mogha Burji 23185 project, which is located to the right of the Budhlada Branch canal. He emphasized that the initiative will significantly reduce irrigation costs for farmers and enhance soil fertility, thus promoting higher crop yields. Cheema expressed the government’s commitment to completing the project swiftly, allowing farmers to start benefiting from the improved irrigation infrastructure without unnecessary delays.
The completion of the canal lining work is expected to alleviate farmers’ reliance on costly diesel for irrigation purposes. Cheema noted that the transition to canal water will improve soil health, as agricultural experts have indicated that canal water typically contains higher concentrations of essential nutrients compared to groundwater sources. This shift is anticipated to foster sustainable farming practices and increase overall agricultural output in the region.
Commitment to Sports Development
In addition to the irrigation project, Cheema participated in the 41st Kabaddi Cup held at Gidriani Village, where he interacted with players and encouraged them to excel in their sporting endeavors. The Finance Minister also took the opportunity to review the construction progress of a sports stadium in the village, which is being developed at a cost of Rs 46 lakh.
Cheema underscored the critical role of sports in fostering disciplined and healthy youth, stating that the Punjab government is dedicated to promoting a vibrant sports culture across the state. He remarked that such initiatives are essential for steering young people away from social issues and encouraging a more active lifestyle.
Through these combined efforts in irrigation and sports development, the Punjab government is taking proactive steps to enhance both agricultural productivity and the well-being of its youth. As these projects advance, they are set to make a lasting impact on the lives of farmers and the community as a whole.
