Overcrowded Canoe Capsizes in Nigeria, Leaving 25 Dead and 14 Missing
At least 25 people have been confirmed dead and 14 others remain missing following the capsizing of an overcrowded canoe in Yobe State, northeastern Nigeria, on the evening of January 4, 2026. The canoe, which was carrying a total of 52 passengers, departed from Adiyani village in Jigawa State and was heading towards Garbi when it overturned around 20:00 local time.
The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency has confirmed that 13 survivors have been rescued so far from the incident. Preliminary investigations conducted by the Jigawa State police indicate that the accident was likely caused by a combination of hull leakage and overloading of the vessel. Many of the victims were reportedly returning from a local market, highlighting the daily risks faced by those relying on traditional transport methods.
Ongoing Rescue Operations
Search and rescue operations are currently underway, involving local divers and security agencies who are working tirelessly to locate those still missing. The local authorities have stressed the importance of these efforts as communities mourn the loss of their friends and family members.
In light of the tragedy, police have raised concerns regarding the vessel’s operator, who may face legal repercussions for violating existing bans on night travel. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the safety challenges in remote regions, where regulations are often overlooked in the face of pressing transportation needs.
Local officials are calling for stricter enforcement of maritime safety regulations to prevent future tragedies. As the search continues, families of the victims await news on their loved ones while grappling with the emotional toll of this devastating event.
