Odisha Man Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Murder

A young man in Odisha has received a life sentence for the murder of a 55-year-old resident, marking a significant ruling in Ganjam district. On December 23, 2023, the District and Sessions Judge, Asanta Kumar Das, delivered the verdict against Biju Behera, aged 29, for the fatal attack on Juria Bisoi that occurred on March 7, 2023.

The court imposed a fine of ₹10,000 on Behera, with a stipulation that failure to pay this amount would result in an additional year of rigorous imprisonment. The sentencing follows a case that has drawn attention due to the violent nature of the crime, which stemmed from previous enmity between the two individuals.

On the day of the incident, Behera attacked Bisoi using a wooden plank at a community center in their village of Dengapadar. Following the assault, Bisoi’s brother, Rama Bisoi, rushed to the scene after receiving alarming news. He discovered his brother lying in a pool of blood and in critical condition. Despite immediate efforts to get him to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, medical personnel pronounced him dead upon arrival.

After the incident, a formal complaint was lodged by Rama Bisoi, which prompted the Sadar Police Station to initiate a murder investigation. Authorities arrested Biju Behera shortly thereafter, leading to the judicial proceedings that culminated in the recent sentencing.
