Nobel Foundation Responds to Trump’s Presentation of Peace Medal
The Nobel Foundation has reiterated its regulations regarding the administration of the Nobel Prizes following the recent presentation of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize medal to US President Donald Trump by Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. This clarification was issued on January 18, 2026, amid growing public interest in the implications of the event.
In an official statement, the Foundation emphasized its commitment to preserving the dignity and prestige associated with the Nobel Prizes. It underscored that the awards are conferred strictly in accordance with the will of Alfred Nobel, which stipulates that they should be given to individuals or organizations that have “conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.” The Foundation firmly stated that each prize is awarded exclusively by authorized institutions and cannot be transferred, shared, or symbolically given to another person.
This clarification follows a notable visit by Machado to the White House, where she presented Trump with the Nobel Peace Prize medal, which was displayed in a golden frame. In return, Trump reportedly gifted Machado a maroon swag bag featuring his signature in gold. Machado had publicly dedicated the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Trump, in recognition of his campaign for the award that had garnered significant media attention over the previous month.
Historical Significance of the Nobel Peace Prize
The Nobel Peace Prize medal itself carries a rich historical legacy. Designed by renowned Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland in 1901, the medal features a portrait of Alfred Nobel on its front. The reverse side depicts three naked figures embracing, symbolizing unity and fraternity, complemented by the Latin inscription “pro pace et fraternitate gentium,” which translates to “for peace and the fraternity of nations.”
The Nobel Foundation’s statement clarifies that while political gestures and personal dedications can attract media coverage, the Nobel Peace Prize is governed solely by the stipulations laid out in Nobel’s original will. The Foundation aims to maintain the integrity of the awards, regardless of the political context surrounding their presentation.
The foundation’s dedication to upholding these principles is evident in its ongoing communication regarding the Nobel Prizes. As the controversy surrounding the presentation of the Peace Prize medal unfolds, the Foundation remains focused on its commitment to preserving the awards’ significance and ensuring that they reflect the values intended by Alfred Nobel.
Overall, this incident highlights the intersection of politics and prestigious awards, raising questions about how such gestures are perceived in the broader context of global diplomacy and recognition of humanitarian efforts. The Nobel Foundation’s response serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to the established guidelines that govern the prestigious honors associated with Nobel’s legacy.
