Nagaland has received a substantial allocation of Rs 4.78 crore from the North Eastern Council (NEC) in November 2023. This funding is designated for various development initiatives, including youth and sports infrastructure, tourism promotion, and support for indigenous cultural projects. The NEC’s monthly update highlights its commitment to enhancing the region’s growth through targeted financial support.

According to an official statement from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and the NEC Secretariat in Shillong, the council disbursed a total of Rs 56.22 crore across all eight northeastern states in November. This funding aims to bolster infrastructure development, enhance livelihoods, and support cultural events, seminars, and research initiatives.

Focus Areas for Development

The NEC emphasized that its support for Nagaland encompasses critical sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, tourism, culture and heritage, education, skill development, and innovation. The statement from the Information and Public Relations (DIPR) department underscores the NEC’s commitment to timely funding and close collaboration with state authorities.

In addition to state-specific allocations, the NEC allocated Rs 14.89 crore to various central agencies and cultural bodies to facilitate regional events and academic engagements. Major initiatives during the month included community development projects for indigenous groups, the establishment of animal feed production units, and scientific pig-breeding facilities. Other noteworthy projects involved the documentation of traditional medicinal knowledge and the expansion of tele-education through smart virtual classrooms.

Significant Project Updates

Among the completed projects in Nagaland is the installation of rainwater reservoirs for fire safety, along with a skill training centre sanctioned in March 2023. This initiative includes rainwater harvesting systems at Dimapur, near the Assam border, and Khuzama, close to the Manipur border. The infrastructure development at the skill training centre in Chiechama is expected to significantly enhance fire-safety preparedness and provide structured training for youth pursuing careers in fire and emergency services.

The NEC’s ongoing support for sports infrastructure development, particularly in Manipur, further demonstrates its commitment to fostering growth in the region. As these initiatives unfold, the collaborative efforts between the NEC and state authorities are anticipated to yield positive outcomes for the communities in Nagaland and beyond.
