The Kremlin has reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing peace negotiations with Ukraine, despite a reported drone attack that targeted the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin. On Tuesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that this incident would not deter Russia from pursuing diplomatic discussions aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Peskov characterized the drone attack as an act that not only targeted Putin but also aimed to disrupt efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump to facilitate peace talks. “Russia is not withdrawing from the negotiation process. We will continue negotiations, primarily with the Americans,” Peskov declared, as reported by RT News. He emphasized that such actions would lead to a more hardened Russian stance in future negotiations.

According to reports from Russian officials, the alleged drone strike occurred over the weekend, with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov asserting that Ukraine attempted to attack Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region. Lavrov condemned the incident as “state terrorism,” contending that Ukraine had launched 91 long-range drones at the presidential residence from December 28 to 29, 2023. He warned that this attack would result in a shift in Russia’s negotiation strategy.

“This terrorist action is aimed at collapsing the negotiation process,”

Peskov told reporters, indicating that the Russian military was preparing for potential retaliatory actions against selected targets.

In contrast, Ukraine has vigorously denied these allegations. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed the reports as “a complete fabrication,” cautioning against the use of such dangerous rhetoric that could undermine diplomatic efforts. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called on the international community to condemn what he characterized as provocative statements from Russia, asserting that Ukraine only targets legitimate military installations within Russian territory.

Peskov rejected Ukraine’s denials, criticizing Western media outlets for aligning with Kyiv’s narrative. He remarked, “We see that Zelenskyy himself is trying to deny this, and many Western media, playing along with the Kyiv regime, are starting to spread the theme that this did not happen,” labeling such claims as “completely insane.”

When questioned about the specifics of Putin’s whereabouts during the drone incident, Peskov declined to provide details, citing security concerns. He acknowledged that the drones were intercepted by air defenses but indicated that inquiries about the wreckage should be directed to the defense ministry.

As tensions continue to escalate, the international community remains watchful of developments surrounding the negotiations. The Kremlin’s firm stance on maintaining dialogue despite the alleged attack underscores the complexities of achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
