Katy Perry Calls for Action to Block $10 Billion in ICE Funding
Pop star Katy Perry is mobilizing her followers to take political action against an additional $10 billion in funding for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In a recent Instagram post, she urged fans to contact their senators before the deadline of January 30, 2024, to express opposition to the proposed funding.
Perry’s post included details on how to engage with lawmakers, specifying whom to call, what to say, and when to act. She emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Call your senators. The power is in your hands. We have until Friday, January 30th to block $10 billion (on top of the $75 billion that’s already been funded) from going through to ICE.” Perry provided the contact number, (202) 224-3121, and included a sample message for her followers to use when reaching out to their representatives.
Despite comments being disabled on her post, it has attracted significant attention, amassing over 121,000 likes. Perry captioned the post, encouraging her audience to “turn anger into ACTION.”
Context of the Funding Controversy
Perry’s call for action coincides with growing national concern over federal immigration enforcement methods. This issue has been particularly prominent in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where several protests have erupted following tragic incidents involving federal agents. Recently, Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse and U.S. citizen, was fatally shot by federal immigration agents during a demonstration. Footage of the incident showed him holding a phone when he was pepper-sprayed, restrained, and subsequently shot, sparking outrage and further debates about ICE’s methods.
With the Senate poised to vote on a spending bill that could allocate additional funding for ICE, Perry’s social media campaign is well-timed. Currently, ICE already has approximately $75 billion in funding, but the proposed increase has drawn criticism from progressive lawmakers and immigration advocates who argue that such funding exacerbates issues related to immigration enforcement.
Perry’s Advocacy and Political Engagement
Katy Perry has long been an advocate for liberal and Democratic causes, actively supporting political figures such as Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Kamala Harris, and Joe Biden. Her recent post is a continuation of her commitment to engage her audience in political action and to raise awareness about critical issues affecting marginalized communities.
As the deadline approaches, Perry’s efforts highlight the importance of civic engagement and the role that public figures can play in motivating their followers to participate in the democratic process. The upcoming vote on ICE funding represents a significant moment for both lawmakers and constituents, with the potential to shape the future of immigration enforcement in the United States.
