The Indian government has approved the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for critical highway projects in the Dakshina Kannada district. This decision was announced on January 15, 2024, by Captain Brijesh Chowta, a Member of Parliament representing the region. The projects include the widening of the Surathkal-BC Road stretch through the Mangaluru Bypass and the construction of service roads along NH-66, stretching from Talapady to Kundapur.

This approval is viewed as a significant advancement in enhancing the region’s road infrastructure. It addresses long-standing issues related to traffic congestion, port connectivity, and road safety. The highways are vital entry points into Mangaluru city, facilitating daily passenger travel and the transportation of goods to and from the New Mangalore Port.

Chowta emphasized that the current lack of service roads and limited capacity has resulted in severe congestion and raised safety concerns for motorists. “Following continuous representations, I pursued this matter with both the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI),” he stated in a release.

The MP highlighted his efforts during the 2024 Monsoon Session of Parliament, where he engaged with senior officials to stress the importance of service roads on NH-66. The issue was also brought to light during a DISHA committee meeting held in Mangaluru in September 2024, further solidifying the need for action.

With the approval of the DPRs, consultants have been officially tasked to commence work on the projects. The DPR will encompass a comprehensive assessment of road alignment, service road construction, grade-separated junctions, traffic capacity enhancements, safety measures, and long-term traffic management strategies.

Chowta expressed his appreciation for the approval, stating that it lays the technical and administrative groundwork necessary for the successful execution of these projects. He also extended his gratitude to Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, and NHAI officials for their responsiveness to the region’s infrastructure requirements.

The greenlighting of these highway projects is expected to significantly improve transportation efficiency in the Dakshina Kannada region and enhance the overall safety of road users.
