Israeli Airstrikes Claim Lives of 28 in Gaza Amid Ongoing Conflict
Gaza’s civil defence agency reported that Israeli military operations resulted in the deaths of at least 28 people on September 29, 2023. This includes 23 fatalities from strikes across the Palestinian territory on Friday and an additional five from an overnight airstrike.
Mahmud Bassal, a spokesman for the Gaza Civil Defence Agency, informed the media that the airstrike in Gaza City targeted a school building, which was being used as a shelter by displaced Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict. This war has now entered its 22nd month, displacing countless civilians.
The Israeli military claimed that its late Thursday strike targeted “a key terrorist in the Islamic Jihad terrorist organization,” a militant group that has collaborated with Hamas in the region. Bassal noted that five additional individuals lost their lives when an Israeli strike hit a tent used for shelter by displaced persons in northern Gaza City.
The civil defence agency reported that more than a dozen Palestinians were killed in various airstrikes across Gaza’s northern, central, and southern regions on the same day. Among the deceased were at least eight individuals who were reportedly struck by Israeli fire while waiting to collect humanitarian aid.
The Israeli military did not provide comment when contacted regarding these incidents. Due to media restrictions in Gaza, independent verification of casualty figures and details provided by the civil defence agency and other parties is challenging.
The conflict has had a devastating toll on the civilian population. According to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-run territory, the ongoing Israeli campaign has resulted in the deaths of over 59,676 Palestinians, the majority of whom are civilians.
The situation in Gaza remains dire as the humanitarian crisis deepens, with many residents facing shortages of essential supplies and services. The ongoing hostilities continue to exacerbate the challenges faced by those caught in the conflict, as calls for peace and resolution grow louder.
