Investigation Underway After Bondi Beach Shooting Claims 15 Lives
The tragic shooting incident at Bondi Beach on December 14, 2023, has left 15 people dead and raised significant questions regarding the suspects’ backgrounds. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed the media, stating that it would be inappropriate to disclose details that could compromise the ongoing investigation. His remarks came during a press conference alongside Chris Minns, the Premier of New South Wales, and senior police officials.
The Prime Minister faced queries from journalists about the origins of the suspects following comments made by Tony Burke. When asked directly whether the suspects hailed from India or Pakistan, Albanese reiterated that such specifics were part of the investigation and could not be revealed at this time.
According to the Telangana Police, one of the gunmen, Sajid Akram, is originally from Hyderabad, India. They reported that Akram had minimal contact with his family in India and that his relatives expressed no awareness of any radical beliefs or activities he may have engaged in. The police further detailed that Akram completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree in Hyderabad before migrating to Australia in November 1998 for employment opportunities.
In Australia, Akram married Venera Grosso, a woman of European descent, and they established their family, which includes their Australian-born son, Naveed Akram, and a daughter. Sajid Akram holds an Indian passport, while both children are Australian citizens. Following his migration, Sajid returned to India six times, primarily for family-related reasons.
The Philippines Bureau of Immigration revealed that both alleged gunmen arrived in the Philippines on November 1, 2023. They traveled aboard Philippine Airlines Flight PR212 from Sydney to Manila and then to Davao. The bureau confirmed that Sajid Akram, aged 50 and an Indian national, used his Indian passport, while Naveed Akram, 24 and an Australian national, traveled on an Australian passport. They returned to Australia on November 28, 2023, on the same flight.
This shooting marks Australia’s deadliest mass shooting in nearly 30 years and is being investigated as a potential act of terrorism targeting the Jewish community. Authorities are focusing on the motivations behind the attack and the connections of the suspects to any extremist groups.
As investigations continue, the Australian public awaits further clarification on the backgrounds of the suspects and the broader implications of this tragic event.
