A catastrophic fire at a bar in Switzerland during a New Year’s Eve celebration has resulted in at least 40 fatalities. Authorities are investigating the incident, focusing on the bar’s safety protocols and any potential criminal liability. The fire erupted at Le Constellation in the upscale ski resort town of Crans-Montana, with initial reports indicating it may have started when sparkling candles were positioned too close to the ceiling.

According to Beatrice Pilloud, the chief prosecutor of Valais, evidence suggests that the blaze began as sparkler candles were held atop champagne bottles. “From there, a rapid, very rapid and widespread blaze ensued,” Pilloud stated on Friday. Investigations will determine whether any individuals may face criminal charges related to the fire.

Local witnesses reported that bar staff were seen carrying fountain candles, raising questions about the safety measures in place. Additionally, concerns have emerged regarding a foam material used for soundproofing the basement ceiling, where many patrons gathered to celebrate. Identifying the victims has proven challenging, with authorities indicating that the severity of the fire will delay identification efforts, potentially lasting several days.

So far, the only confirmed victim is Emanuele Galeppini, a teenage Italian professional golfer. Some sources close to the investigation suggest that several victims may be under the age of 16, as the bar has garnered popularity among young people. In Switzerland, individuals can legally consume beer and wine starting at age 16.

One of the owners of Le Constellation, Jacques Moretti, stated that the bar had undergone three inspections over the past decade, asserting that all operations adhered to regulations. Local authorities, including Stephane Ganzer, head of security in Valais, are examining whether the bar complied with its annual building inspections. Ganzer confirmed that the local government had not flagged any concerns or reported defects to the canton prior to the fire.

As the community mourns, residents have been laying flowers and leaving tributes near the site of the tragedy. Ashley Hauri, a 23-year-old local, expressed her shock and fear, as several of her former colleagues were inside the bar when the fire broke out. “I was really shocked,” Hauri recalled. “I tried to contact my friends, but I had no answers, and I was really scared and panicked because I wanted to do something.”

The area around Le Constellation has begun to reopen as police continue their investigation into this harrowing event. The loss of life has left a profound impact on the community, as families and friends continue to grieve for those affected by the disaster. The investigation remains ongoing, and further developments are expected as authorities seek to uncover the full circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
