Himachal Minister Presents Progress on Key Road Projects to Union Minister
Himachal Pradesh Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh met with Union Minister for Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan on February 22, 2024, to discuss the progress of road projects under the fourth phase of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). During the meeting in New Delhi, Singh provided a comprehensive report detailing both the current status of sanctioned projects and ongoing works in the region.
A significant focus of the discussion was the challenging situation regarding road projects in the remote and high-altitude area of Dodra Kwar, located in the Shimla district. Singh highlighted that a segment of the road sanctioned under PMGSY Phase-I remains incomplete due to harsh geographical conditions, including difficult terrain and severe weather. This road is crucial for the local population, particularly for disaster management, emergency health services, and the delivery of essential goods.
In light of these challenges, Singh requested special relaxations and additional financial support from the central government to expedite the completion of the pending road packages in Dodra Kwar. He emphasized the need for all-weather connectivity for this geographically isolated region.
According to the Himachal Pradesh Public Works Department, approximately 1,500 km of rural road projects have been sanctioned under PMGSY Phase-IV, with an estimated budget of around ₹2,300 crore. Furthermore, the State Government has submitted a proposal for an additional 1,200 km of roads under the second phase of PMGSY-IV. Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are currently being prepared, and approval for these projects is anticipated soon.
Singh also appealed to public representatives, panchayat members, and landowners to facilitate the process by providing necessary land for road construction. He stated that community cooperation is essential in connecting the most deprived areas of the state to the broader road network, which is vital for development.
Union Minister Chouhan responded positively, assuring Singh that issues related to the pending projects in Dodra Kwar would be prioritized with the Ministry of Finance and other relevant authorities. He expressed a commitment to ensuring that financial approvals are expedited.
The Himachal Pradesh government reiterated its dedication to developing a robust rural road network in collaboration with the central government. This initiative is not merely about building roads; it reflects a commitment to fostering equal opportunities, promoting rural prosperity, and achieving self-reliance for the people of Himachal Pradesh.
