Former Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak Discusses Resignation Offer During 2024 Uprising
Zunaid Ahmed Palak, the former state minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Bangladesh, testified before the International Crimes Tribunal-1 in Dhaka on January 15, 2026. He revealed that he had supported student protesters during the mass uprising in July 2024 and had expressed his intention to resign to then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Palak stated that he decided to step down on August 2, 2024, aligning with the demands of the students involved in the protests.
During his testimony, Palak noted that he actively advocated for the protesters during a cabinet meeting, where he informed Hasina of his decision to resign. His statements were made as part of a hearing focused on a defense petition seeking discharge for him and Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of the former prime minister and an ICT affairs adviser. The case involves allegations of inciting crimes against humanity related to internet shutdowns during the protests.
In response to the allegations against Joy, his counsel, Monjur Alam, argued that the charges are “unfounded” and do not justify prosecution. After hearing both sides, the tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, scheduled a decision on whether to frame charges for January 21, 2026.
The July 2024 uprising was marked by widespread protests among students demanding various reforms, including changes to the educational system and governmental accountability. The movement gained significant traction, leading to heightened tensions between the government and the demonstrators.
Palak’s testimony and the ongoing tribunal proceedings reflect the complex political landscape in Bangladesh, where the legacy of past uprisings continues to influence current governance and public sentiment. The outcomes of these hearings may have lasting implications for the individuals involved and the broader political climate in the country.
