Flight Operations Halted as Hundreds of Indians Stranded in West Asia

Escalating tensions in West Asia, particularly involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, have led to the suspension of flight operations, leaving hundreds of Indian nationals stranded across the region. Several countries have closed their airspace, including significant hubs such as Tehran, Tel Aviv, Beirut, and Dubai, disrupting travel for thousands of passengers.

The situation intensified after Iran initiated strikes targeting U.S. military installations in response to a joint operation by Israel and the U.S. As a result, airspace closures across at least eleven locations have led to widespread flight cancellations. Many travelers, including Indian citizens, find themselves in precarious situations, particularly at airports in the United Arab Emirates and other affected areas.

Stranded Passengers and Government Response

On February 28, 2024, hundreds of passengers, including prominent Indian figures, were stranded at Abu Dhabi International Airport. Among those affected was double Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, who expressed her distress on social media regarding the abrupt suspension of flights while she was en route to the All England Open badminton tournament. Bollywood actor Sonal Chauhan also shared her plight, appealing to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for assistance, emphasizing the uncertainty surrounding her return home.

Reports indicate that around 1,200 Indian students remain in Iran, with the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association urging the government to devise an evacuation plan in light of the escalating conflict. Additionally, eighty-four MBA students from Pune’s Indira School of Business Studies found themselves stranded in Dubai after their planned study tour was disrupted by the airspace closures. The institute confirmed that the students were safe and had been relocated to a nearby hotel.

Several Indian airlines, including Air India and IndiGo, have also been affected by the airspace restrictions. As of February 28, Air India had two flights stuck in Dubai, while IndiGo reported eight aircraft unable to depart from various Middle Eastern airports. In total, Air India Express has five aircraft held up due to the ongoing crisis.

Indian Government’s Advisory Measures

In response to the crisis, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs issued advisories urging citizens in the affected regions, including the UAE, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Iran, to exercise caution and adhere to local authorities’ instructions. The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi confirmed it is in communication with local authorities to assist stranded passengers, while the embassy in Tel Aviv advised residents to remain vigilant and follow safety directives issued by Israeli officials.

Specifically, the Indian embassy in Iran has cautioned nationals to avoid unnecessary movements and stay indoors as tensions continue to escalate. The advisory highlights the seriousness of the situation, emphasizing the need for individuals to prioritize their safety.

The crisis has particularly impacted residents from Madhya Pradesh, where over 700 individuals, including two former members of the Legislative Assembly, are stranded in the UAE. Many had traveled for business or tourism and are now facing uncertainty regarding their return. Amol Kataria, chairman of the Travel Agents Federation of India’s Madhya Pradesh unit, confirmed the situation, stating that these individuals are awaiting updates on flight operations.

As the conflict unfolds, the Indian government remains committed to facilitating the safe return of its citizens. India’s Ambassador to Israel, JP Singh, assured that efforts to repatriate stranded nationals would commence as soon as conditions allow. The rising tensions in West Asia have created a complex and challenging environment for travelers, underscoring the need for ongoing vigilance and preparedness from both citizens and government authorities.
