El Mencho’s Death Triggers Violence and Hostage Claims in Mexico
Mexican drug cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, widely known as El Mencho, was killed during a military operation on March 10, 2024. His death has sparked significant unrest in the states of Jalisco and Michoacán, with reports of violence erupting in major cities such as Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta.
The military operation that resulted in El Mencho’s death also led to clashes and chaos in the surrounding areas, prompting Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro to confirm ongoing violence, including gunfire and fires at local airports. Eyewitnesses reported hearing shots fired at the Guadalajara Airport, raising alarm among travelers.
Chaos Unfolds in Major Cities
In a social media post, Governor Lemus Navarro urged residents to remain indoors until the situation stabilizes. He stated, “We remain in Code Red. We reiterate the recommendation to avoid leaving your homes. The clashes are occurring in several federal entities.” Videos circulating online depicted burning vehicles and dark smoke billowing over city roads, illustrating the turmoil.
The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), which El Mencho led, has historically engaged in violent retaliation against law enforcement and rival cartels. Following the announcement of his death, conservative commentator Laura Loomer claimed on social media that armed CJNG members had stormed the Guadalajara Airport and were targeting American tourists. She stated, “They are now taking American tourists hostage at nearby highways and hotels,” although these claims have not been independently verified.
Reports from multiple sources, including AP and Reuters, confirmed El Mencho’s death, stating that the operation was led by the Mexican Defense Ministry. Despite the chaos, official details regarding the circumstances of his death remain limited.
US Embassy Issues Security Alert
In light of the escalating violence, the US Embassy in Mexico issued a security alert advising American citizens in affected regions, including Jalisco, Tamaulipas, and Michoacán, to shelter in place. The embassy emphasized the importance of staying indoors until further notice due to ongoing security operations and potential criminal activity.
The unrest has not been confined to Jalisco. Reports indicate that highways in several states are being blocked by gunmen, and local authorities are on high alert. Alfredo Ramirez Bedolla, the governor of Michoacán, confirmed that state highways had been obstructed following the military operation in Jalisco.
El Mencho’s rise to power transformed the CJNG into a formidable criminal organization, rivaling other major cartels, including the Sinaloa Cartel, led by the imprisoned Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán. His death may escalate violence as the cartel seeks to establish control and retaliate against authorities.
The situation continues to develop, and security forces remain on high alert as they work to restore order in the region.
