Congress Leader Criticizes BJP for Undermining Democracy in Haryana

Senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament Kumari Selja has voiced strong concerns regarding the state of democracy in India, accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of abusing central agencies to influence elections. During a recent meeting with Congress workers in the Dabwali area of Sirsa district, Selja emphasized that the misuse of these agencies is particularly evident in states where the BJP does not hold power.

Selja’s remarks came on January 11, 2024, as she addressed public grievances and discussed the party’s strategies ahead of upcoming elections. She noted that the interference of central agencies tends to escalate as elections approach, citing West Bengal as a significant example where attempts to sway the democratic process have been observed.

In addition to her criticisms regarding central agencies, Selja also condemned the BJP government for undermining the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). This legislation, enacted during the previous United Progressive Alliance (UPA) administration, guarantees 100 days of employment for rural households, with the central government covering the entire financial burden.

Selja accused the current administration of weakening MGNREGA by transferring a significant portion of the financial burden—specifically, 40 percent—onto state governments. This shift, she argued, has diluted the program’s effectiveness at a time when rural employment opportunities are already scarce.

The Congress leader highlighted her party’s commitment to advocate for the rights of the poor and marginalized communities. “The Congress has always stood with those in need and will continue to fight for their rights,” Selja stated, reinforcing her party’s focus on social justice and equitable development.

As the political landscape in India continues to evolve, Selja’s assertions reflect a broader concern within the opposition regarding the integrity of democratic processes and the welfare of rural communities. The Congress party remains poised to challenge the incumbent government on these critical issues in the lead-up to the elections.
