Chief Priest Arrested in Sabarimala Gold Loss Investigation
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has arrested the chief priest of the Sabarimala Temple, Kandararu Rajeevaru, as part of its ongoing investigation into the gold loss case. This development occurred in Thiruvananthapuram on January 9, 2024, marking a significant step in a case that has drawn considerable public attention.
Rajeevaru was interrogated at an undisclosed location earlier in the day before being taken to the SIT office, where his arrest was formally documented. The arrest follows statements made by Unnikrishnan Potty, the prime accused in the case, along with those from Padmakumar, the former president of the Travancore Devaswom Board. Officials indicated that these testimonies were pivotal in leading to Rajeevaru’s apprehension.
The SIT’s investigation revealed that Rajeevaru had maintained close ties with Potty. He had also recommended the replating of the Dwarapalaka (guardian deity) plates and the Sreekovil (sanctum sanctorum) doorframe plates at the temple. When the Travancore Devaswom Board sought his approval for this work, Rajeevaru granted it, according to official sources.
This arrest marks the 11th apprehension in the case since the Kerala High Court established the SIT to investigate the circumstances surrounding the gold loss. Rajeevaru had previously been interrogated by the team as part of their thorough investigation process.
The Sabarimala gold loss incident has raised numerous concerns, leading to increased scrutiny of temple operations and the individuals involved in their management. As the SIT continues its work, further developments are expected, with implications for both temple governance and broader religious practices in the region.
The case underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in religious institutions, particularly in managing valuable assets. The ongoing investigation reflects a commitment to uncovering the truth, ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.
