Bangladesh Mourns Khaleda Zia: A Legacy of Leadership and Resilience
Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia of Bangladesh passed away at the age of 80, leaving a significant void in the nation’s political landscape. She died on March 5, 2024, at approximately 06:00 local time, after a prolonged illness at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. Her death has prompted widespread expressions of sorrow and recognition of her contributions to the country.
In a heartfelt condolence message, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus referred to Zia as a “great guardian” of Bangladesh’s democracy. He expressed his profound sadness over her passing, noting that the nation had not only lost a political leader but also a prominent figure who played a crucial role in shaping the country’s political history. Yunus emphasized that Zia’s legacy would be remembered for her efforts in establishing democracy and advocating for multi-party politics.
Zia, a pivotal leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and a three-time prime minister, was known for her tenacity in the face of political adversity. Yunus remarked that her “uncompromising leadership” was instrumental in liberating the nation from undemocratic conditions, inspiring many along the way. He stated, “Through her leadership, the nation was repeatedly freed from undemocratic conditions and inspired to regain liberty.”
The Chief Adviser reflected on Zia’s historical significance, recalling her as Bangladesh’s first female prime minister. He pointed out her role in the struggle against autocracy, particularly in dismantling the nine-year rule of HM Ershad. Yunus praised her for laying a strong economic foundation during her tenure, particularly through liberalization policies initiated after she took office in 1991.
Zia’s political journey was not without challenges. Yunus highlighted how her success also made her a target of “extreme political vengeance,” leading to her sentencing to 17 years in prison due to what he described as “false and fabricated cases.” This period of incarceration was a testament to her resilience and dedication to her political ideals.
In light of her passing, the BNP has declared seven days of mourning. Yunus extended his condolences to Zia’s family and the party’s leaders and activists, calling her death an “irreparable loss” for the nation. He urged citizens to remain calm and patient during this difficult time and to pray for the legacy of the departed leader.
As Bangladesh reflects on the life of Khaleda Zia, her impact on the nation’s political landscape and her relentless pursuit of democratic principles will continue to resonate, shaping the future of the country she served for decades.
