Akhilesh Yadav Demands Parliamentary Debate on West Asia Conflict
Akhilesh Yadav, the chief of the Samajwadi Party, has called for a debate in the Lok Sabha regarding the escalating conflict in West Asia. On March 9, 2024, Yadav urged the Indian government to clarify its foreign policy, suggesting that India’s actions are being influenced by the United States.
During a press conference outside Parliament, Yadav emphasized the importance of discussing the implications of the conflict, particularly given the significant number of Indians residing and working in Gulf countries. He highlighted concerns for those affected, stating, “A large number of Indians are stuck in Gulf countries. Journalists who had accompanied the Prime Minister during his visit to Israel as political journalists have now become war journalists. How will they return?”
Yadav’s comments followed Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s recent trip to Israel, during which he was accompanied by various journalists who are now facing difficulties due to the ongoing violence in the region. The former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh criticized the government’s handling of the situation and called for transparency regarding its foreign policy.
Concerns Over Foreign Policy and US Influence
The Samajwadi Party leader voiced his discontent with the current administration’s approach to foreign relations. “On one hand, we are talking about becoming Atmanirbhar (self-reliant), but on the other, we are following the orders of the US,” Yadav stated. He accused the US of setting terms for India’s decisions, including limitations on oil purchases.
Yadav’s call for a parliamentary discussion underscores the urgency of addressing these foreign policy issues and the potential impact on Indian citizens abroad. He argued that the government should articulate its position and strategy regarding the conflict in West Asia, as well as its overall approach to international relations.
In his remarks, Yadav stressed the need for accountability, stating, “There should be a discussion on these issues and the way the government has auctioned its foreign policy.” As the situation in West Asia continues to evolve, the demand for a clear and coherent stance from the Indian government grows more pressing.
The Lok Sabha’s response to Yadav’s request remains to be seen, but the call for dialogue reflects a broader concern about India’s foreign policy direction in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
