Afghanistan Issues Warning to Pakistan Amid Border Tensions

Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan have escalated following a recent warning from Afghanistan’s government. After unsuccessful peace talks in Istanbul, the Taliban-led administration in Kabul cautioned Islamabad about potential consequences should hostilities arise. During a public gathering, Afghanistan’s Minister for Tribal, Border and Ethnic Affairs, Noorullah Noori, directly addressed Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, emphasizing the importance of understanding historical context in current conflicts.

Noori stated, “I tell Khawaja Asif that Russia and America are far away geographically, but Punjab and Sindh are right next to Afghanistan.” He urged Pakistan not to overestimate its military capabilities and warned against testing Afghan patience. “Read history first, then decide,” he cautioned, referencing Afghanistan’s historical resistance to foreign invasions.

The remarks came in the wake of increased violence along the border, where both nations have accused each other of initiating attacks. Noori reminded Pakistan of its previous conflicts, particularly its struggles against India and the creation of Bangladesh in 1971. He asserted, “If war breaks out between Afghanistan and Pakistan, both the elderly and the youth of Afghanistan will rise to fight,” highlighting the potential for widespread conflict.

Failed Peace Talks and Ongoing Disputes

The recent warning follows a series of peace negotiations that have failed to yield results. Turkish and Qatari mediators facilitated a third round of discussions in Istanbul, but the talks ended without an agreement. Asif acknowledged the deadlock, stating, “There is no programme or hope for a fourth round.” He noted that while the mediators made commendable efforts, the Afghan delegation’s refusal to sign a formal written agreement hindered progress. “Pakistan will accept only a formal written deal. They insisted on verbal assurances, which is impossible in international negotiations,” he explained.

Asif articulated Pakistan’s primary concern: “Our only demand is that Afghan territory must not be used to launch attacks on Pakistan. We will retaliate if provoked.” He stated that a ceasefire would remain in effect unless an attack occurred.

The ongoing tensions primarily revolve around the Durand Line, a contested border established during British colonial rule. Pakistan accuses Afghanistan of permitting its territory to be used for terrorist activities, while Afghanistan blames Pakistan for aggressive actions along the border. The previous round of talks on October 25 also failed to address Pakistan’s concerns regarding cross-border terrorism.
