22 Students Hospitalised After Mid-Day Meal in Telangana School
Around 22 students were hospitalised on January 30, 2024, after consuming mid-day meals at a primary school in Sangareddy, located in the Indian state of Telangana. The students experienced symptoms such as stomach pain and discomfort shortly after eating sambar and rice. Authorities acted quickly, transferring all affected students to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.
According to a spokesperson from the Narayanked Police, all 22 students are now in stable condition and are expected to be discharged from the hospital by the end of the day. The police official stated, “Around 22 students were hospitalised after consuming sambar and rice this afternoon. They experienced symptoms like stomach pain and were immediately shifted to the hospital for treatment. All are stable, and we’re expecting they’ll be discharged by tonight. We haven’t received any complaints from parents.”
As investigations continue, officials are awaiting further details regarding the cause of this incident. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the well-being of the students.
Concerns Over Food Safety in Schools
This incident in Telangana follows a separate case involving over 33 students who fell ill after consuming mid-day meals at the Odakkalpalayam Government Middle School near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. This event occurred on January 4, 2024, when students were served a mid-day meal under the Sultanpet Union jurisdiction. Shortly after eating, many students reported vomiting and severe stomach pain, prompting immediate medical intervention.
Affected students were taken to various hospitals, including Aram Hospital in Sultanpet, as well as Purushothaman Hospital and Royal Care Hospital in Senjeri Malai. Following the incident, the Sultanpet Block Development Officer visited the school to conduct an inquiry. In response, orders were issued to inspect the quality of the mid-day meal, and the Sultanpet police initiated an investigation.
These incidents have raised serious concerns about food safety and the monitoring practices of the mid-day meal scheme in government schools across India. Authorities are under increasing pressure to ensure the health and safety of students receiving these meals, emphasizing the importance of stringent quality checks and oversight mechanisms.
