West Indies Coach Hails Shimron Hetmyer’s Batting Prowess Ahead of Final Group Match
West Indies batting coach Floyd Reifer praised Shimron Hetmyer as a “proper batsman” ahead of their final group stage match in the ICC T20 World Cup. As the unbeaten West Indies prepare to face Italy at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, Reifer highlighted Hetmyer’s enhanced training habits and potential to excel at different batting positions.
In a press conference before the match, Reifer noted that Hetmyer has evolved since making his mark in youth cricket in 2016. “Hetmyer is a proper batsman. It is just unfortunate that he was put into roles as a finisher,” he stated. He emphasized that the cricketing world is now witnessing the best version of Hetmyer, who can contribute significantly to the team’s success by batting at various positions.
So far in the tournament, Hetmyer has scored 133 runs across three innings, boasting an impressive average of 66.50 and a strike rate exceeding 166, including a top score of 64. This year, he has amassed 366 runs in nine T20 internationals, averaging 52.28.
As the West Indies aim for a fourth consecutive win, they face a spirited Italy team. Italy’s head coach, John Davison, expressed hope that their performance in the T20 World Cup would lead to increased opportunities for the team. “We would love to play more cricket,” Davison remarked, pointing out the need for better infrastructure and facilities in Italy to support the growth of the sport.
He noted, “If some funds came our way, we would be happy to develop some facilities. That would probably be the number one thing for the federation—to get some turf facilities and be able to host games in Italy.”
During the tournament, Italy has impressed with its fighting spirit, including a notable victory over Nepal and a commendable effort against England, where they fell short by just 24 runs. Captain Wayne Madsen echoed Davison’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of gaining experience through participation in such global events. “We would like to think that we would be at the next World Cup,” Madsen stated, highlighting their aspirations for future competitions.
Additionally, Davison mentioned that there is recognition of the team’s achievements at home, with plans for a reception in the Italian Senate to celebrate their participation in the tournament. “It’s been a great experience for everyone involved, from the back staff to the opening batter,” he concluded.
As the West Indies prepare to take on Italy, both teams are looking to make a lasting impact in this year’s T20 World Cup. The match promises to be an exciting showcase of talent and determination from both sides, with the potential to shape the future of cricket in Italy and affirm the West Indies’ position as a dominant force in the tournament.
