Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take immediate action to protect Kannadigas and other Indian nationals amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. In a message shared on social media platform X, he outlined several urgent measures aimed at ensuring the safety and return of those affected by the ongoing conflict.

In his communication to the Prime Minister, Siddaramaiah highlighted the need for enhanced diplomatic efforts and the readiness to initiate special repatriation flights if necessary. He stated, “I have written to the Prime Minister seeking urgent action to safeguard Kannadigas and other Indians affected by the escalating Middle East tensions.” Furthermore, he emphasized that Karnataka is prepared to collaborate fully to ensure the safety of its citizens.

Airspace restrictions imposed by several countries in West Asia have severely disrupted international flight operations, leaving many Kannadigas stranded, particularly in major transit hubs like Dubai. The Chief Minister expressed concern over the impact of these restrictions on Indian nationals, noting that the situation has created significant uncertainty and distress among families both in Karnataka and across India.

Siddaramaiah’s letter detailed that advisories from the Ministry of Civil Aviation indicated that multiple countries in West Asia had implemented airspace restrictions and issued Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs). He explained, “These developments have resulted in a large number of Kannadigas and other Indian nationals being stranded, particularly in major transit hubs such as the UAE (Dubai).”

Proposed Measures for Repatriation and Support

In light of the evolving security situation, the Chief Minister proposed five specific measures for consideration by the Indian Government. These include strengthened diplomatic outreach, a repatriation preparedness framework, a dedicated national coordination mechanism, an integrated registration and information system, and passenger protection protocols.

Siddaramaiah elaborated on the importance of these measures, stating, “Strengthened Diplomatic Outreach: Enhanced engagement through Indian Embassies and Consulates to ensure continuous monitoring, protection, and guidance for Kannadigas and other Indian nationals in affected areas.” He underscored that the Karnataka government has activated its State Emergency Operations Centre and district centres to operate continuously, working closely with Union authorities to assist stranded citizens.

Furthermore, he urged the Ministry of Civil Aviation to collaborate with airlines to facilitate flexible rescheduling, waive penalties, and provide interim support for those unable to travel. Siddaramaiah remarked, “India’s vibrant diaspora in West Asia, including thousands of Kannadigas, has long contributed to our nation’s economic strength and global engagement. At this critical juncture, a swift, coordinated, and compassionate national response will not only safeguard lives but reaffirm the unwavering commitment of the Republic of India to every Kannadiga and every Indian national, wherever they may be.”

Context of Rising Tensions in the Middle East

The backdrop to this urgent appeal includes a significant increase in military strikes and Iranian counter-attacks following a major conflict in the Middle East that began with a military offensive on February 28. This operation, referred to as Operation Epic Fury/Roaring Lion, involved coordinated air and missile strikes by US and Israeli forces targeting various military sites and infrastructure across Iran.

As casualties rise and strikes continue, international leaders and organizations are urging for de-escalation to prevent a broader regional war. Despite these calls for peace, the conflict shows no immediate signs of easing, adding to the urgency of Siddaramaiah’s message to the central government.

In conclusion, the Chief Minister assured the Prime Minister of the Karnataka Government’s full cooperation in all efforts related to the safety and repatriation of Kannadigas and other Indian nationals affected by the ongoing crisis.
