Gellar, who starred in the original television series and took on the role of executive producer for the revival titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, shared her feelings about the cancellation on social media. The fate of the pilot had been uncertain for some time, according to Deadline. Reports indicated that while the project showed promise, it was ultimately deemed “not perfect.” Sources noted that Zhao’s artistic vision might not have fully aligned with the requirements of the series, leading to the decision to cancel the reboot.

The pilot episode was crafted by the screenwriting duo Nora Zuckerman and Lilla Zuckerman and directed by the acclaimed Academy Award-winning filmmaker Zhao.
