Padma Shri 2026 Awardees Celebrate Recognition of Excellence

On January 26, 2026, India celebrated its Republic Day by announcing the prestigious Padma Shri awards, one of the country’s highest civilian honors. The recipients, including scientists, social workers, and artists, expressed profound joy and gratitude upon receiving this recognition for their contributions to society.

Celebrating Scientific Achievements

Among the awardees, Chandramouli Gaddamanugu, a distinguished aerospace engineer known for leading the Akash missile system during Operation Sindoor, dedicated his award to his team. He expressed excitement over the recognition from the Government of India, stating, “I am excited to hear this news. The Government of India has recognised my team, Akash’s services.” Gaddamanugu’s wife, Seetha, highlighted the hard work that led to this honor, emphasizing the pride felt by their family and the entire Akash team.

The significance of the award extends beyond personal achievement. Dr Kumaraswamy Thangaraj, a scientist specializing in Cellular and Microbiology, articulated how this recognition could inspire future generations to engage in scientific fields, particularly genetics. He remarked, “I am very thankful to the Government for recognising my work… this will actually stimulate the younger generation to pursue science.”

Honoring Social Contributions

Social worker Budri Thati from Chhattisgarh, acknowledged for her efforts in empowering tribal women, reflected on her journey since 1984. “Receiving such a big award is no small feat,” she said, emphasizing the collective effort of the community in her work. Similarly, Mohan Nagar, another social worker, expressed gratitude for the honor, linking it to the auspicious timing of Narmada Jayanti.

Award recipient Mahendra Kumar Mishra, also from Chhattisgarh, noted that the Padma Shri represents the culmination of 40 years of dedication. He raised concerns about the educational challenges faced by tribal students, advocating for instruction in their native languages to enhance learning.

Former Chairman of the University Grants Commission, Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, acknowledged the award as a recognition of collective efforts in advancing the education system. He praised the National Education Policy for its focus on inclusivity and learning outcomes, stating, “Young people are India’s assets. We should continue to strengthen our universities and colleges.”

The Padma Shri awards this year recognized a total of 131 civilian honors across various categories, highlighting achievements in public life, arts, literature, and sports. The recognition serves not only as a celebration of individual accomplishments but also as a reminder of the ongoing efforts necessary to address societal challenges and inspire future change.
