Outrage Grows Over Racial Attack on Women in Delhi

A disturbing racial attack on two women from the Northeastern states of India has ignited widespread outrage and calls for justice. The incident occurred on March 6, 2026, near the Saket District Court in Delhi, where the women, hailing from Manipur and Assam, were out for a walk. The attack involved not only verbal abuse but also a physical assault, highlighting ongoing racial tensions faced by individuals from the North East in mainland India.

According to reports, the women were targeted by a group of men who allegedly shouted racist and sexual remarks at them. When one of the women confronted the group, the situation escalated dramatically. She was physically assaulted, and one assailant reportedly attempted to stab her. Both women suffered minor injuries and were transported to Safdarjung Hospital, where their condition has been described as stable.

The Delhi Meitei Co-ordinating Committee (DMCC) has filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Malviya Nagar Police Station, demanding that authorities take stringent action against the attackers. Dr. Seram Rojesh, the committee’s convenor, expressed frustration over the lack of intervention from bystanders during the attack. He emphasized the need for immediate arrests and actions that would deter future hate crimes.

Political leaders from the North East have also condemned the incident. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma took to social media platform X to express his anger over the repeated assaults on Northeastern individuals, stating, “The physical attack on two of our people near Saket Court, Delhi is sickening. Racial bullying should not be accepted as the new normal.” He urged authorities to act decisively.

Former Chief Minister of Manipur, N. Biren Singh, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the necessity for Northeastern citizens to feel safe and respected. He called for a thorough investigation to ensure accountability for those responsible for the attack.

This incident is part of a troubling pattern of racially motivated violence against people from the North East in Delhi. Last month, three women from Arunachal Pradesh were verbally abused in the same area, prompting community leaders to demand stronger safety measures in urban environments.

In response to the latest attack, the Delhi Police have dispatched a team to investigate the matter. Authorities have assured the public that they will take strong measures against those involved in the attack, aiming to restore faith in the safety of the city’s streets.
