Modi Honors Holocaust Victims During Visit to Yad Vashem
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem on March 7, 2024, to pay tribute to the victims of the Holocaust. Accompanied by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Modi laid a wreath and honored the memory of those who suffered during this tragic period in history.
The visit underscored a shared commitment to peace and human dignity, as highlighted by Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, in a post on X. “Honouring the memory of victims of the Holocaust and renewing our shared commitment to uphold peace and human dignity,” he stated.
As part of his visit, Modi toured the Book of Names Hall, a poignant area within Yad Vashem that preserves the names and memories of millions who perished during the Holocaust. Jaiswal further emphasized the significance of the memorial, describing it as “a solemn reminder of the brutality of the past and our collective resolve to stand against injustice and create a better world.”
This marks Modi’s second visit to Yad Vashem, reflecting a deepening relationship between India and Israel. Established in 1953 by an act of the Knesset, Yad Vashem is dedicated to Holocaust commemoration, documentation, research, and education.
Modi’s current trip to Israel is part of a two-day visit, and it follows his first visit to the country in July 2017, during which the India-Israel relationship was elevated to the level of a strategic partnership. The enduring ties between the two nations continue to strengthen through various diplomatic engagements.
The visit to Yad Vashem serves as a reminder of the importance of remembering the past and fostering international cooperation to ensure such atrocities are never repeated.
