Mangaluru is set to host two significant cultural events focused on Konkani identity on March 7 and 8, 2024. Organized by TLC Art Cafe and Susheg Jivith – Dementia Care Centre, the events will feature a talk by historian Alan Machado and a screening of the award-winning film Nachom-ia Kumpasar.

Engaging Discussions on History and Identity

The first event, a talk titled “History and Identity,” will take place on Saturday, March 7, at TLC Art Cafe from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Historian and author Alan Machado, alongside Jason Pinto, SDB, will delve into early Indian history, the Goan Inquisition, and the contrasting narratives that have emerged over time. Machado will draw from his new edition of Sarasvati’s Children, which includes updated research on the River Sarasvati and the Gauda Saraswat Brahmins, enhancing the understanding of Konkani identity. He will also discuss his upcoming works, which aim to dismantle myths surrounding historical events.

Jason Pinto, a Konkani writer and PhD researcher in Linguistics, will provide his insights on community identity, enriching the conversation that has shaped the cultural landscape of coastal Karnataka and Goa.

Film Screening of a Cultural Classic

The following evening, on March 8, Nachom-ia Kumpasar will be screened at PVR Nexus Mall in Pandeshwar at 4:00 PM. This critically acclaimed film, set in the vibrant backdrop of Goa during the 1960s and 70s, tells a love story intertwined with the region’s rich musical heritage. Featuring performances of twenty Konkani classics by the legendary Chris Perry, the film highlights the contributions of musicians who significantly influenced Bollywood’s Golden Era.

This screening serves as a fundraiser for Susheg Jivith – Dementia Care Centre and Silver Circle, in partnership with Music as Medicine. Tickets for the film are priced at Rs 500, and interested attendees can book their seats by contacting +91-99019 04858 or via email at [email protected].

Both events promise to provide valuable insights into Konkani identity, enriching the cultural dialogue in Mangaluru. The discussion and film screening aim not only to entertain but also to educate and inspire reflection on the historical narratives that shape contemporary identities.

TLC Art Cafe is dedicated to fostering community engagement through art, heritage, and scientific inquiry, making these events a fitting addition to their ongoing cultural initiatives.
