Mamata Banerjee Releases Poetry Book to Challenge Electoral Roll Changes
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has taken an unconventional approach to protest against the ongoing political and legal challenges surrounding the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. She has authored a collection of 26 poems titled “SIR: 26 in 26,” which was released on January 22, 2023, at the 49th International Kolkata Book Fair.
The poems, with titles such as ‘Panic’, ‘Doom’, ‘Mockery’, ‘Fight’, ‘Democracy’, and ‘Who Is To Blame’, reflect Banerjee’s concerns about the current state of democracy in West Bengal. In the introduction, she dedicates the book to “those who have lost their lives in this ruinous game,” suggesting that a “relentless campaign of fear” has been directed at the people of Bengal.
In her poem ‘Doom’, she expresses a sense of urgency: “How long do we stay silent still? Silence does not mean peace—it means lives are falling, dripping away to nothing.” This sentiment underscores her call for accountability, as she insists that “answers will be given in people’s court.”
Another poem titled ‘Morgue’ paints a grim picture of the political landscape, alleging that “democracy is being beaten, scrubbed raw.” Banerjee further claims that the act of protest has succumbed to an “agency-raj,” implying that it faces substantial repression.
During a press conference, Banerjee revealed that the book was written in just three days while she was traveling. Known for her literary talents, she has published 163 books across various genres, including poetry, short stories, essays, and political commentary. Additionally, she is a painter whose works have been exhibited both in India and abroad, and she has also composed songs on a variety of themes.
Interestingly, Banerjee stated that she does not draw a pension as a former Member of Parliament and has waived her salary as Chief Minister. Instead, she relies on the royalties from her literary works to cover her personal expenses.
Banerjee’s multifaceted artistic pursuits highlight her commitment to expressing her views on pressing social issues. Her latest work serves as a powerful vehicle for her dissent against the electoral roll revisions, showcasing her belief in the role of art as a form of resistance.
