Karnataka made history on December 24, 2025, by successfully chasing down a massive target of 413 runs against Jharkhand in the opening match of the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Led by skipper Mayank Agarwal, this remarkable achievement marks the highest chase recorded in the tournament’s history.
In the thrilling encounter held in the Elite Group A, Jharkhand scored 412 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 50 overs. Highlighting their innings was a blistering 33-ball century from captain Ishan Kishan, supported by significant contributions from Virat Singh and Kumar Kushagra, who each scored half-centuries. For Karnataka, Abhilash Shetty claimed four wickets, finishing with figures of 4/72 in ten overs.
Karnataka’s response was nothing short of extraordinary. They reached the target with 15 balls to spare, thanks to an explosive innings from Devdutt Padikkal, who scored 147 runs. The skipper, Mayank Agarwal, added 54 runs to solidify the chase.
Historic Chases in Vijay Hazare Trophy
Karnataka’s remarkable feat eclipses previous records in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The second-highest chase remains 384 runs, achieved by Andhra against Goa during the 2011-12 season. In that match, Goa set a formidable target of 383 runs, with Rohit Asnodkar leading the charge with 139 runs. Andhra’s successful chase was powered by notable performances from Prasanth Kumar (56), Syed Shahabuddin (66), Venugopal Rao (115*), and AG Pradeep (104), as they reached 385 runs for the loss of six wickets in just 48.5 overs.
In the 2024-25 season, Karnataka also showcased their batting prowess by chasing down 383 runs against Mumbai. In that match, Mumbai set a challenging target of 382 runs, with contributions from Ayush Mhatre (78), Hardik Tamore (84), Shreyas Iyer (114*), and Shivam Dube (63*). Karnataka responded decisively, with Aneesh KV scoring 82 and Krishnan Shrijith notching an impressive 150*, guiding the team to 383 runs for the loss of just two wickets in 46.2 overs.
In a display of competitive spirit, Jharkhand’s innings against Karnataka also marked a high-point of the day, setting the stage for the record chase. Their total of 412 runs was bolstered by key partnerships, but ultimately fell short in the face of Karnataka’s determined batting lineup.
As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Karnataka, now etched in the record books, as they look to build on this remarkable start in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The excitement surrounding these high-scoring encounters continues to elevate the status of one-day cricket in India, drawing in fans and inspiring upcoming cricketers.
