Indian Cabinet Extends Jal Jeevan Mission Until December 2028

The Union Cabinet of India has approved the extension of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) until December 2028, with an enhanced financial outlay of Rs 8.7 lakh crore. This announcement was made by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during a press briefing on Tuesday. Originally launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019, the initiative aims to provide safe and adequate drinking water through tap connections to all households in rural areas across India.

The Cabinet has endorsed a proposal from the Ministry of Jal Shakti to restructure the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission. This restructuring focuses on shifting from infrastructure development to effective service delivery, which will be supported by improved drinking water governance and a robust institutional framework for sustainable rural piped water supply.

In this revamped approach, the total budget for the Jal Jeevan Mission has been increased to Rs 8.69 lakh crore. The Central Government’s assistance has also been significantly raised to Rs 3.59 lakh crore, a substantial increase from the Rs 2.08 lakh crore allocated in the initial phase of the mission in 2019-20.

Innovative Framework for Water Management

A key element of the updated Jal Jeevan Mission is the introduction of a national digital framework known as “Sujalam Bharat.” This system will assign every village a unique identifier, termed as Sujal Gaon or Service Area ID. The framework aims to digitally map the entire drinking water supply system from the source to the tap, ensuring improved management and accountability in water distribution.

This enhanced focus on governance and service delivery is expected to make a significant impact on the accessibility and quality of drinking water for millions of rural households in India. By extending the mission, the government aims to not only meet its ambitious targets but also to ensure a sustainable approach to water supply management in the long term.

The Jal Jeevan Mission represents a critical step towards fulfilling the fundamental right to clean and safe drinking water, a necessity for improving public health and empowering rural communities throughout India.
