Gautam Adani Welcomes First Passengers at Navi Mumbai Airport
Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, personally welcomed passengers on March 14, 2024, as commercial operations began at the new Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). Following this momentous event, IndiGo flight 6E882 took off for Hyderabad at 08:40, marking the completion of the airport’s inaugural arrival and departure cycle.
As part of the launch, Akasa Air and Air India Express also commenced their services at NMIA, enhancing the lineup of airlines operating from the new facility. Akasa Air’s flight, operated by its 31st aircraft, connected Delhi with NMIA, while Air India Express began direct flights to Bengaluru and Delhi.
Overview of Navi Mumbai International Airport
Navi Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (NMIAL) is the entity responsible for the airport’s development, construction, operation, and maintenance. This public-private partnership consists of Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), a subsidiary of Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL) which holds a 74 percent stake, and the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), a government undertaking of Maharashtra, which owns the remaining 26 percent.
With its IATA code NMI and ICAO code VANM, NMIA is positioned to become a significant aviation hub in India. Located strategically in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, the airport aims to address the increasing air traffic demands of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and western India.
Covering an area of 1,160 hectares (approximately 2,866 acres), NMIA is designed to accommodate up to 90 million passengers annually once fully operational. The airport features two parallel runways, modern terminal buildings, and advanced cargo facilities aimed at facilitating seamless passenger movement and efficient cargo handling.
Sustainable Infrastructure and Future Prospects
As a greenfield airport, NMIA prioritizes sustainability through eco-friendly infrastructure, including the use of renewable energy and green building practices. The airport’s design is inspired by the lotus, India’s national flower, reflecting a fluid and futuristic aesthetic.
In its initial phase, NMIA is equipped to handle up to 20 million passengers per year and 0.5 million metric tonnes of cargo annually. With a focus on modern infrastructure and sustainability, NMIA is poised to become a major gateway to India and a key player in the global aviation landscape.
The first operations at NMIA signal a significant milestone in enhancing connectivity and capacity within India’s aviation sector, promising to not only facilitate travel but also stimulate economic growth in the region.
