Fraud Alert: Scammers Target LPG Customers via WhatsApp and SMS

Consumers of LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) in India are facing a growing threat from scammers using WhatsApp and SMS to steal sensitive banking information. Fraudsters are sending deceptive messages that either warn recipients of a potential gas connection disconnection or offer enticing discounts, aiming to entice individuals into clicking malicious links. This surge in scams coincides with the increasing prevalence of digital payments in the country.

The latest tactic involves messages that state, “Your gas connection is about to be disconnected,” or promotions like, “Click this link to get a discount on your cylinder.” Victims who act on these messages often find themselves losing significant amounts of money. The perpetrators typically impersonate representatives from legitimate gas agencies, making the scams appear credible.

Understanding the Scam

Fraudsters craft messages that include fake links. When individuals click on these links, they are directed to fraudulent web pages that solicit personal information, including names, addresses, and banking details. In some instances, they may claim that a pending electricity or gas bill needs to be settled and request that users download an app for a nominal fee, such as ₹10, to “update” their accounts. Downloading these apps can compromise users’ phones, allowing scammers to gain access to one-time passwords (OTPs) and other confidential data.

Protecting Yourself Against Scams

To safeguard against these scams, consumers are advised to follow several precautionary measures:

  • Use Only Official Apps: Always book LPG cylinders through official applications provided by recognized companies such as Bharat Gas, Indane, or HP Gas.
  • Ignore Suspicious Links: Do not click on links received in WhatsApp messages or SMS from unknown senders.
  • Don’t Share Personal Information: Even if someone claims to represent your gas agency, do not disclose your OTP or banking details. Legitimate companies will never request OTPs over the phone.
  • Verify Information: If uncertain, consult the official website of the gas company or contact your local agency directly.

If you become a victim of such a scam and lose money, it is crucial to act swiftly. Immediately report the incident by calling the cybercrime helpline number 1930. Additionally, individuals can file complaints online at the national cybercrime portal.

Awareness is a key defense against these types of fraud. By staying informed and cautious, consumers can protect their hard-earned money from scams that exploit digital payment systems.
