Dubai Conflict Drives Up Medical Costs, Strains Expat Families
Dubai, once regarded as a safe haven for expatriates, is now facing significant challenges as the regional conflict escalates. Tensions resulting from Iran’s response to recent US and Israeli military actions have led to drone attacks and explosions, disrupting daily life. This precarious situation has left many residents, particularly expatriates, grappling with uncertainty, especially in critical situations such as medical emergencies.
Among those affected is Thilakkumar Jalathu Aniruthraraj, an expatriate from Tamil Nadu, and his wife Shaamini Ramesh. They are currently struggling to secure medical care for Thilakkumar’s mother, who has been in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for over 40 days due to a severe bacterial infection. During her visit to Dubai, her condition worsened, necessitating continuous ventilator support. Doctors anticipate that she will require at least two more months of intensive care.
The financial burden of her treatment has become overwhelming. Daily hospital expenses have reached approximately Rs 3 lac, excluding additional costs for scans and specialized treatments. With the total bill now exceeding Rs 1.25 crore and rising by Rs 4 lac each day, the couple faces a daunting financial crisis.
Initially, they planned to repatriate Thilakkumar’s mother to India for more affordable long-term care, aiming for a medical escort flight on March 4, 2024. Unfortunately, this option was cancelled due to the ongoing conflict. Now, their only viable choice is a private air ambulance, which has skyrocketed to Rs 50 lac in the current crisis.
“The biggest hurdle now is the air ambulance. We need Rs 50 lac immediately just to get her home,” Thilakkumar explained. Shaamini emphasized the additional challenge of securing a timely schedule for the evacuation, stating that even if funds are arranged, availability remains a significant obstacle.
The couple is now appealing for assistance, seeking support from charitable organizations and hoping for discounts from the hospital. “We have been here for eight years and never faced such a situation. It is very difficult to handle this, both emotionally and financially,” Shaamini added.
For those who wish to assist Thilakkumar and Shaamini, contributions can be made to Thilakkumar’s bank account at ADCB Bank. The details are as follows:
– Name: Thilak Kumar Jalathu Aniruthraraj
– IBAN: AE410030000709918217001
– Account: 709918217001
– Branch: IBD – Khaled Bin Waleed Street

The ongoing conflict has transformed what began as a medical emergency into a life-threatening financial and logistical crisis for expatriate families. This situation highlights the broader humanitarian impact of geopolitical instability, affecting lives far beyond the immediate conflict zones.
