Ajsal’s Late Header Earns Kerala Blasters 1-1 Draw Against East Bengal
Kerala Blasters FC salvaged a dramatic 1-1 draw against East Bengal FC, thanks to a last-minute header from Muhammad Ajsal during Match 31 of the Indian Super League 2025-26 season. The match took place at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on March 14, 2026, at 19:30 IST. This result marked the Blasters’ first point of the season.
The home team took an early lead when Youssef Ezzejjari converted a penalty in the 10th minute. The incident unfolded when Edmund Lalrindika squared the ball to Ezzejjari, who was fouled by Aibanbha Dohling. The referee awarded the penalty, and Ezzejjari confidently sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, putting East Bengal ahead 1-0.
Despite the setback, Kerala Blasters remained aggressive, continuously pressuring the Red and Gold defence throughout the first half. In response, East Bengal altered their starting lineup significantly, with head coach Óscar Bruzón incorporating captain Saúl Crespo and PV Vishnu into the match. Conversely, Blasters’ coach David Català made four adjustments, introducing Sandeep Singh, Danish Farooq, Fallou Ndiaye, and Ebindas Yesudasan to the pitch.
As the match progressed, East Bengal sought to extend their lead in the second half. Despite their efforts, the Blasters’ defence effectively contained the attacking threats posed by Ezzejjari and Miguel Ferreira. The home side came close to doubling their advantage, notably through a well-executed corner routine that saw Basim Rashid narrowly miss the target with a first-time shot.
As the game entered its final stages, East Bengal adopted a defensive strategy to maintain their slim lead. This tactic ultimately proved costly. In the 92nd minute, a lapse in concentration allowed Ajsal to capitalize during a corner. Unmarked, he executed a free header, beating goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Gill and securing a crucial equalizer for the Blasters.
Ajsal’s late goal earned him the title of Player of the Match, a fitting recognition for his decisive contribution. The draw leaves both teams reflecting on missed opportunities, with Kerala Blasters hopeful of building momentum from this result as they look to improve in the remainder of the season.
