Zimbabwe clinched a stunning victory over Sri Lanka, winning by 6 wickets in their final Group B match of the T20 World Cup 2026 held in Colombo on February 19, 2026. This impressive performance not only secured Zimbabwe’s spot in the Super 8 stage but also saw them finish the group stages at the top of the table with 7 points.

Chasing a challenging target of 179 runs, Zimbabwe’s batting lineup maintained control, steadily progressing towards their goal. The standout performer was opener Brian Bennett, who contributed a pivotal half-century. His opening partner, wicket-keeper Tadiwanashe Marumani, added a solid 34 runs off 26 balls, while Ryan Burl provided crucial support with a quick-fire 23 runs off just 12 deliveries.

At one point, Zimbabwe found themselves at 98 for 2 when Bennett was joined by Sikandar Raza. The duo forged a vital partnership of 69 runs before Raza was dismissed by Dasun Shanaka, caught off the bowling of Dushan Hemantha for 45 runs off 26 balls. Shanaka’s exceptional fielding claimed another wicket shortly after, sending Tashinga Musekiwa back to the pavilion in quick succession.

With Zimbabwe needing just 8 runs in the final over, Tony Munyonga made an impactful entrance, hitting a six on the first ball and following it up with a single. Bennett sealed the victory with a boundary, confirming Zimbabwe’s unbeaten run in the group stages.

Earlier in the match, Zimbabwe’s bowlers faced a challenging start, with Sri Lanka reaching 100 for 2 in just 12.1 overs. However, consistent pressure from the Zimbabwean bowlers led to the Sri Lankan innings collapsing to a total of 178 for 7 in their allotted overs. Pathum Nissanka was the standout batsman for Sri Lanka, scoring 62 runs off 41 balls while Pavan Rathnayake remained not out on 44 runs off 25 balls.

Raza reflected on the match, stating, “When I walked out there, I thought the openers laid the foundation. And I think when Ryan Burl went out there as well, we tried to change the momentum. Unfortunately, he got out too. After the first eight balls, I said to myself, I’ve only got four or five runs, but I can see the ball, I’m middling the ball. So from then on, I backed myself that if I find a ball, I can middle it and hopefully it flies for the distance. And that’s all it was.”

Zimbabwe’s victory not only marks a significant achievement in their cricketing journey but also raises expectations as they advance to the next stage of the tournament. The team’s ability to overcome strong opponents, including a previous win against Australia, sets a promising tone for their performance in the Super 8 stage.
