Young Sprinter Bhushan Majhi Shines at Khelo India Games

Bhubaneswar: In a remarkable display of talent and determination, young sprinter Bhushan Majhi from Lanjigarh has captured the attention of the sports community by winning a bronze medal in the 100-metre open men’s category at the Khelo India Tribal Games Athletics Meet 2026. This event took place at the Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela, Odisha, marking a significant achievement not just for Bhushan but also for the tribal region he hails from.

Bhushan’s journey from the modest playgrounds of Bhataguda village to a national podium is a testament to the power of structured grassroots support in sports. He grew up in a household where his father is a school teacher and his mother contributes as a community resource person within a Self-Help Group. Initially, his parents had reservations about pursuing a career in sports, but their perspective changed as they witnessed Bhushan’s unwavering commitment and progress.

His talent was first recognized by his school physical education teacher, Dushmanta Majhi, who saw potential in Bhushan during his early school years. Dushmanta took a personal interest in mentoring him, guiding him to harness his natural speed. Despite the lack of formal training facilities, Bhushan devoted himself to his sport, cycling nearly seven kilometres daily for practice and enhancing his endurance through football.

A pivotal moment in Bhushan’s athletic career occurred in July 2025 when he became part of the Vedanta Grassroots Sports Initiative. This program offers professional coaching and has been instrumental in refining his raw abilities into competitive performance. The initiative, supported by Vedanta Alumina Business, aims to identify and nurture talent in rural areas, providing athletes with essential coaching, equipment, and training opportunities.

According to Ramachandra Bihari, a local school teacher, Bhushan’s success highlights the positive impact of such initiatives in rural communities. The programme currently supports over 150 young athletes in the region, contributing to significant achievements, including 89 medals at state-level competitions during the 2024-25 season.

Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya, CEO of Vedanta Alumina Business, expressed pride in Bhushan’s accomplishment, emphasizing that access to proper platforms can transform rural talent into national achievers. His journey not only reflects personal success but also signals a promising future for grassroots sports in Odisha.
