Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy will miss the upcoming Christmas Day game against the Detroit Lions due to a hairline fracture in his right hand. Head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed the injury on Tuesday, stating that McCarthy’s availability for Week 18 against the Green Bay Packers remains uncertain.

McCarthy sustained the injury during the second quarter of the Vikings’ narrow 16-13 victory over the New York Giants on December 17, 2023. Although O’Connell did not specify when exactly the injury occurred, video footage revealed that McCarthy collided with the helmet of Giants defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris. Following the game, McCarthy was seen wearing a latex glove on his injured hand, indicating the severity of the situation.

This marks the seventh game that McCarthy has been forced to miss this season due to injury. Earlier in the year, he was sidelined for five games because of a right high ankle sprain and missed an additional game while in concussion protocol. Notably, he also missed his entire rookie season in 2024 due to a torn meniscus in his right knee.

In McCarthy’s absence, Max Brosmer will take over as the starting quarterback for the Vikings. The team, currently navigating a challenging season, hopes to secure a win against the Lions to bolster their playoff chances. The implications of McCarthy’s injury could be significant as the Vikings aim to maintain momentum heading into the final weeks of the regular season.

As the situation develops, fans and analysts alike will be keeping a close watch on updates regarding McCarthy’s recovery and potential return to the field.
