Tensions Rise as Paras Dogra Headbutts Fielder in Ranji Final
The Ranji Trophy final turned heated on March 15, 2024, as Jammu & Kashmir captain Paras Dogra headbutted Karnataka fielder KV Aneesh during a tense moment on Day 2 of the match at the KSCA Hubli Cricket Ground. The physical altercation stemmed from alleged sledging directed at Dogra, prompting umpires to intervene.
During the 101st over of Jammu & Kashmir’s innings, Dogra was involved in a steady partnership with teammate Kanhaiya Wadhawan when the incident occurred. Following an edge from a delivery by Prasidh Krishna that went for four runs, Dogra exchanged words with Aneesh, who was fielding at forward short leg. As tensions escalated, Dogra charged at Aneesh, making contact with his helmet. Mayank Agarwal, fielding nearby, quickly stepped in to diffuse the situation.
Reports indicate that Aneesh had been engaging in persistent sledging, which likely provoked Dogra’s reaction. Despite Dogra’s immediate apology after the incident, Aneesh reportedly rejected it, further inflaming the atmosphere. Nearby players, including KL Rahul and Agarwal, added to the tension with verbal exchanges directed at Dogra.
This incident occurred shortly after Dogra had retired hurt on the opening day after being struck on the glove by a rising bouncer from pacer Vijaykumar Vyshak. Another confrontation followed soon after, this time involving Vyshak and Wadhawan. During a single attempt, Wadhawan’s elbow brushed past Vyshak, resulting in a standoff that required intervention from umpires and teammates. Throughout these altercations, Dogra maintained his composure from the opposite end of the pitch.
Dogra’s Record-Setting Season
The Ranji Trophy final is significant for Dogra, who recently became only the second player in history to score 10,000 runs in the tournament, following Wasim Jaffer. He achieved this milestone during the semi-final match against Bengal in Kalyani, where he scored 58 runs amidst a challenging start for his team. Jammu & Kashmir ultimately won that match by six wickets, securing their place in the final for the first time in the tournament’s history.
On Day 1 of the final, Jammu & Kashmir posted a solid total of 284 runs for two wickets, with a standout performance from Shubham Pundir, who scored a century, and Yawer Hassan, who contributed 88 runs. As play continued on Day 2, Wadhawan scored 70 runs before being dismissed. At the time of writing, Dogra remained unbeaten on 51 runs off 142 balls, alongside Sahil Lotra, who was 8 not out, as Jammu & Kashmir reached 432 for five in 134 overs.
The final is shaping up to be a thrilling conclusion to the tournament, with both teams showcasing their skills and resilience on the field. As the match progresses, all eyes will be on the players to see how they handle both the pressure of the game and the emotional challenges that arise.
