India faced a challenging start in their Group A opener of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, held at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on February 7, 2024. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav played a pivotal role, scoring an unbeaten 84 runs to guide the team to a competitive total of 161/9 against the USA.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, India was quickly put under pressure by a disciplined American bowling attack. Right-arm pacer Shadley van Schalkwyk took advantage of a pitch that provided both grip and movement. He struck early, dismissing Abhishek Sharma for a golden duck and later claiming the wickets of Ishan Kishan (20), Tilak Varma (25), and Shivam Dube in a devastating spell. By the end of the Power-play, India found themselves in dire straits at 46/4.

The situation escalated further when Rinku Singh (6) and Hardik Pandya (5) fell victim to ambitious shots, leaving India reeling at 77/6 in the 13th over. Despite several dropped catches by the USA, including opportunities from Kishan, Varma, and Yadav, the Indian batters struggled to effectively capitalize on these chances.

Amid this chaos, Yadav showcased remarkable composure. Initially opting for a more restrained approach, he slowly began to rebuild the innings. Partnering with Axar Patel, he forged a crucial 41-run partnership that injected some much-needed momentum. The turning point arrived in the 16th over when the duo hammered 21 runs off Saurabh Netravalkar. Yadav capped this over with a four and a six, signaling his intention to accelerate.

Yadav reached his half-century off just 36 balls and unleashed a flurry of boundaries in the final over. He took apart Netravalkar, scoring an impressive 21 runs in that over, including two fours and two sixes. His final tally of 84 runs came off 49 balls and included ten fours and four sixes, highlighting his ability to dominate even on a challenging pitch.

For the USA, van Schalkwyk was the standout performer, finishing with figures of 4/25, while Harmeet Singh contributed with 2/26. Despite their impressive bowling spells, the USA’s fielding lapses proved costly, impacting their chances against the defending champions.

In summary, India’s total of 161/9 set a competitive target for the USA in what turned out to be a thrilling opener for both teams at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
