West Indies batsman Shimron Hetmyer delivered an impressive performance, scoring 75 runs off just 42 balls in the second T20I against South Africa at SuperSport Park on March 14, 2024. His explosive innings helped the team set a formidable target of 221/5 while batting first. Despite Hetmyer’s efforts, the West Indies ultimately lost the match as South Africa chased down the target with relative ease.

After the early dismissal of captain Shai Hope for just 4 runs, Hetmyer entered the crease at number three, quickly making an impact with a boundary off his first ball. He continued to assert his dominance, hitting three more boundaries within the first few overs, propelling West Indies to 68/1 after six overs. His aggressive batting style was on full display as he took on fast bowler Anrich Nortje, striking back-to-back sixes in the tenth over, reaching his half-century in just 29 balls.

Hetmyer’s innings, which included eight boundaries and three sixes, marked his second-highest score in T20I cricket, following his unbeaten 81 against Sri Lanka in 2021. This performance also marked his first T20I half-century since July 2023, when he scored 52 against Australia. Notably, Hetmyer has demonstrated consistent form in recent matches, achieving three scores of over 45 in his last four T20I appearances. Earlier this month, he narrowly missed another half-century, scoring 46 off just 17 balls against Afghanistan.

As the West Indies prepare for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which begins on February 7, Hetmyer’s current form is promising. He now boasts a total of 1,297 runs from 74 matches, with an average of 21.98 and a strike rate of 131.54. Of particular note, he has scored 121 runs in five T20 World Cup matches at an average of 31.75.

The T20 World Cup will take place in India and Sri Lanka, and Hetmyer’s experience in the Indian Premier League (IPL) could be advantageous. He has played 75 T20 matches in India, amassing 1,353 runs at an average of 29.41 and an impressive strike rate of 148.19. Additionally, he has scored a rapid 43* in his only T20 outing in Sri Lanka.

In 2025, Hetmyer was on a roll, scoring 1,392 runs across 62 T20 innings at an average of 26.26 and a remarkable strike rate of 166.10. His ability to cross the fifty-run mark eight times during that period, with a top score of 97*, highlights his potential as a key player for the West Indies in the upcoming World Cup.

As the team looks to build on its recent performances, Shimron Hetmyer stands out as a crucial asset, capable of turning games in the blink of an eye. His recent form suggests he could be the player to watch in the T20 World Cup, aiming to lead the West Indies to success in a tournament where every run will count.
