Samson Credits Bumrah’s Bowling in India’s T20 World Cup Victory
India’s wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson attributed his Player-of-the-Match award to the outstanding performance of bowler Jasprit Bumrah during the semi-final of the 2026 T20 World Cup. In a thrilling match at Wankhede Stadium, India narrowly defeated England by seven runs, securing a place in the final set for March 2026.
The semi-final witnessed a remarkable total of 499 runs, with both teams displaying aggressive batting. However, it was Bumrah’s economical bowling that played a pivotal role in India’s victory. His figures of 4 overs, 33 runs, and 1 wicket underlined his effectiveness, particularly in the crucial death overs. Following the match, Samson highlighted Bumrah’s contributions, stating, “This [award] should go to him actually. If he didn’t bowl that way in the death overs, I would not be standing here.”
Bumrah’s impact was felt early in the innings when he dismissed England captain Harry Brook for just seven runs with a slower delivery on his very first ball. He later excelled in the final overs, conceding only 14 runs while dismissing key batsmen. His yorkers and low full-tosses proved challenging for the English batsmen, notably during the 18th over, where Jacob Bethell struggled to score.
India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav, also commended Bumrah’s performance, saying, “He showed character and pulled the game away from England with his performance today.” Yadav recognized Bumrah’s long-standing contributions to the Indian team and his ability to deliver under pressure.
Samson’s own performance in the semi-final was equally impressive, as he scored 89 runs off 42 balls. This achievement followed his impressive 97 not out against the West Indies in a virtual quarter-final, solidifying his role as a crucial player in India’s journey to the final. Yadav praised Samson for his aggressive approach, noting that he maintained focus even as wickets fell, demonstrating confidence in the batting conditions.
The final match will see India face New Zealand in Ahmedabad. Yadav expressed his excitement, stating, “It’s an unbelievable feeling, obviously, playing in India, leading such a wonderful side.” He emphasized the special significance of the final taking place in India, underscoring the pride and anticipation felt by the team.
As India prepares for this pivotal encounter, the performances of players like Bumrah and Samson will be critical in their quest for T20 World Cup glory.
