Sabalenka and Gauff Fight Through to Fourth Round at Australian Open

Top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka and third-seeded Coco Gauff showcased their resilience at the Australian Open on March 1, 2024, both advancing to the fourth round after hard-fought victories. Sabalenka overcame a challenging match against Anastasia Potapova, winning 7-6 (4), 7-6 (7). Sabalenka, who aims for her third Australian Open title in four years, displayed remarkable composure despite moments of inconsistency. In the first set, she found herself leading 6-5 with a 40-0 advantage but could not convert on three set points. Potapova fought back, pushing the set into a tiebreaker. Sabalenka initially surged ahead 3-0, but Potapova leveled the score at 3-3. Ultimately, Sabalenka clinched the set with a precise backhand down the line after saving set points.

The second set proved equally dramatic. After falling behind 0-4, Potapova mounted a comeback to equalize at 4-4, necessitating another tiebreaker. Despite having three set points, Potapova could not close it out, and Sabalenka prevailed in the clutch moments. In her on-court interview, Sabalenka praised Potapova’s performance, stating, “She played incredible tennis… There are days where you just have to fight, and it was such a fight.”

Looking ahead, Sabalenka is set to face Victoria Mboko, who triumphed over 14th-seeded Clara Tauson with a score of 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-3. Sabalenka noted her awareness of Mboko’s aggressive style, saying, “She’s a fighter. She’s playing really good, aggressive tennis.”

In other matches, 18-year-old Iva Jovic defeated seventh-seeded Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 7-6 (3). Jovic attributed her success to advice from tennis legend Novak Djokovic, who had provided her with valuable tips just a day prior. “When Novak gives you some advice, you follow it,” Jovic remarked after the match.

Jovic’s next opponent will be Yulia Putintseva, who ended the run of Turkish player Zeynep Sonmez with a score of 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3. Additionally, Elina Svitolina of Ukraine advanced by defeating Diana Shnaider of Russia 7-6 (4), 6-3.

As the tournament progresses, both Sabalenka and Gauff will aim to maintain their momentum and push towards the later stages of the competition, where the stakes are higher and the matches increasingly intense.
