Philip Rivers returned to the NFL on December 18, 2023, but his efforts were not enough to secure a victory for the Indianapolis Colts, who suffered a 48-27 loss to the San Francisco 49ers at Lucas Oil Stadium. This game marked Rivers’ second start since his return, and he showcased his ability by throwing for 277 yards and two touchdowns, yet the Colts remain winless during his tenure, now holding an 0-2 record.

Rivers, who rejoined the Colts following Daniel Jones‘ season-ending Achilles injury, expressed a mix of enjoyment and frustration about his current situation. “It’s been a blast to prepare and go out there with these guys again,” he said. “But the name of the game is not to have a good time; it’s to find a way to lead your team to a win. And we’ve come up short.”

Despite his impressive individual performance, which included completing 23 of 35 pass attempts, Rivers could not overcome the Colts’ defensive struggles. The team gave up a season-high 6.7 yards per play and failed to force a single punt, as the 49ers accumulated 440 total yards throughout the game.

Defensive Woes Contribute to Loss

Colts defensive tackle DeForest Buckner acknowledged the disappointment in the team’s performance, stating, “I feel bad because we let him down. He’s balling, putting up points, and it’s our job to ensure the other team doesn’t score, and we didn’t show up.” Rivers’ family, including his wife, ten children, and other relatives, attended the game, adding a personal touch to the evening despite the disappointing outcome.

Coach Shane Steichen praised Rivers’ performance, noting, “I thought he was on fire all game.” Rivers’ ability to push the ball downfield was a significant improvement compared to his previous game against the Seattle Seahawks, in which he only threw for 120 yards on a more conservative game plan.

As the Colts faced their fifth consecutive loss, playoff hopes dwindled. They now sit with a 2% chance of making the postseason, as assessed by ESPN Analytics. Another loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars or a win by the Houston Texans would officially eliminate them from contention. Rivers remains optimistic about his remaining games, stating, “You dreamed of playing in this game as a kid… Heck yeah, I would play, even if we were 2-14.”

With two games left in the season, Rivers is determined to find a way to lead the Colts to victory. The team is looking to regroup and turn around their fortunes as they head into the final stretch of the season.
