Pathum Nissanka Powers Sri Lanka with 18th ODI Half-Century
Sri Lankan opener Pathum Nissanka delivered a remarkable performance in the third and final One Day International (ODI) against England at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Nissanka reached his 18th ODI half-century with a swift 25-ball 50, contributing significantly to Sri Lanka’s ambitious run chase of 358 runs.
Nissanka’s innings commenced with a solid partnership alongside Kamil Mishara, as the duo built an opening stand of 48 runs. The Sri Lankan team raced to 100 runs within just 10 overs, showcasing their aggressive approach. Nissanka’s innings featured a series of powerful shots, including a four and a six off Jamie Overton in the third over.
Despite the quick dismissals of Mishara and fellow batsman Kusal Mendis, Nissanka maintained momentum, driving the scoring forward with an array of boundaries. His half-century was achieved in the ninth over bowled by Sam Curran, but he was eventually dismissed by Overton shortly after, falling against the run of play.
Nissanka’s performance included five fours and three sixes, reinforcing his reputation as a formidable top-order batsman. With this innings, he has now accumulated a total of 2,920 runs from 77 ODIs, boasting an impressive average of 40.55 and a strike rate nearing 90. Notably, he has recorded eight half-centuries in home conditions.
This latest half-century against England marks Nissanka’s second in ODI cricket against this opponent. In seven ODIs against England, he has amassed 190 runs at an average of 31.66, indicating a growing proficiency in facing this international side.
As Sri Lanka looks to solidify its position in international cricket, Nissanka‘s contributions will be vital for the team’s success in upcoming matches. His blend of consistency and explosive batting makes him a key player to watch in future encounters.
