Pakistan Cricket Board Fines Players PKR 5 Million After T20 Exit
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has imposed a fine of PKR 5 million (approximately $16,000) on each player of the national cricket team following their disappointing performance in the 2026 T20 World Cup. This decision reflects the PCB’s response to the team’s inability to meet expectations during the tournament, marking a shift in how the board addresses failures in international competitions.
Mohsin Naqvi, the PCB President, is leading this initiative as the board aims to enforce accountability among players. Internal PCB sources indicate that leadership has reached a crucial point after multiple unsatisfactory performances in significant International Cricket Council (ICC) events. The board’s stance emphasizes that players who receive substantial financial rewards for victories must also face consequences when they fail to meet basic tournament objectives.
Timeline of the T20 World Cup Performance
The idea of imposing fines was considered informally during the group stage, particularly following a pivotal defeat against India. Attending the match in Colombo, Naqvi expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s struggle under pressure and tactical errors that contributed to their loss.
While Pakistan progressed to the Super 8 stage, their performance did not inspire confidence. The team ended the tournament with only one victory from three matches, which included a narrow win against the Netherlands. A significant defeat to India by 61 runs, a rain-affected match against New Zealand, and a decisive loss to England dashed their hopes of advancing to the semifinals. Their final match saw them secure a win against Sri Lanka, but this victory came too late to change their overall standing in the competition.
Accountability and Criticism of Player Performance
The fallout from this disappointing campaign has placed considerable pressure on team captain Salman Ali Agha and former captain Babar Azam. Both have faced criticism for the team’s lackluster performance. In post-match press conferences, Agha acknowledged the challenges faced by the middle order, emphasizing an over-reliance on individual performances rather than cohesive team play.
Players under central contracts in Pakistan typically receive substantial financial packages, which include monthly retainers and a share of ICC revenue. Nevertheless, none of the players were classified in the top A category for the 2025-26 cycle. Concerns remain among PCB officials regarding the lack of improvement in on-field results, despite players enjoying better financial conditions, including earnings from the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
One of the few highlights for Pakistan during the tournament was Farhan, who set a record by surpassing Virat Kohli‘s 2014 record for the most runs in a single T20 World Cup edition. Farhan scored a remarkable 383 runs at an average of 76.60, including two centuries, showcasing his talent amid an otherwise disappointing team performance.
As the PCB implements these fines, it seeks to instill a culture of accountability within the national team, holding players responsible for their performance while also emphasizing the importance of achieving success on the international stage.
